Blackhall Overview:

      General Description
A steep earth embankment that forms part of the reclaimed coastline on the site of the former Blackhall Colliery. There is always beach to land on and the usual run is left to the mouth of Castle Eden Dene and right to Dead Man's Steps. However, it is possible to fly further in each direction. (If the wind is off to the east Horden, Easington or Seaham are better places to fly.)
      Access Notes
Towards the north end of Blackhall turn into Tenth Street and at the bottom of the street go over a small bridge. At the entrance to the industrial estate either:
1) Turn right into the industrial estate and then first left onto a track by the allotments. Park in the second car park on your left. Or;
2) Continue on the road with the allotments on your right until it is possible to turn right and follow a track (again with the allotments on your right to a gate)
      Safety
If flying alone leave no equipment unattended.

Certain sections of the cliff top can rotor, dependant on wind direction and speed.

If landing on the beach there are many small rocks and pools that can contain vile coloured liquid, it's not a good idea to drop your wing in one.

If venturing south to Crimdon at high tide there is no beach beneath the cliffs around Double Decker Cave (`The Point'). this shold only be attempted at low tide !

Avoid landing in the sea.
      Contact
None this is free access land. Although a countryside warden from the council has challenged people flying here in the past he has never actually stopped anyone and the situation appears to have been resolved. Inform the sites officer if you are challenged and try to get a name of the person that approached you.

Several members have reported problems with horsey people at Blackhall. So it’s still ok to fly there but taking off at Horden or Crimdon may prove less problematic.
