Cross Fell Overview:

      General Description
High Cap is a small limestone outcrop 1200ft beneath and west of Cross Fell itself. It is one of many faces separated from each other by steep sided gullies, all of which contribute to a big mountain `feel'. The Pennine massif stretches many miles to the northwest and south east offering superb and challenging cross-country flying. The best wind direction to launch at High Cap is SW but is fine in anything from SSW to W. In a southerly you can have good flying on `Man at Edge' this involves taking off at High cap and shooting off downwind to the right, this southerly ridge works very well, however, it can be turbulent in a southerly, especially at the south end of high cap.
Absolutely do not land near livestock!
      Access Notes
Head for Kirkland to the east of Penrith. Please drive very slow through Kirkland, especially past the holiday cottages just before you hit the fell track. Park on the left, in the space just after the cottages, or carry on up the track and through the gate. Either park on right just after the first gate (sensible if you value your car) or carry on up the rutted track. It is possible to take 4X4's further up the fell side track where they can park on the left at GR - NY 65700 34235 (usual bottom landing in a s-sw) or carry on to High Cap (very rough - strictly 4x4's only to the top).

Cross Fell can get very busy on the right day and extreme care needs to be taken to minimise our impact. If at all possible, double up with other members of the club and reduce the volume of traffic on the track. If parking on the hill make absolutely sure the track is clear and that large farm vehicles can pass.
      Safety
Toplanding HG's - OK in a s.westerly (beware of the deep gully on approach)
- Tricky in a westerly don't approach too high and avoid the gully behind the parking area !

A mountain site; wind speed can increase rapidly with height gain.

Cloud can quickly develop and cover the hill.

The gullies can be turbulent, with very strong acceleration

PG's If high fly well out as to avoid being blown over the back

PG's don't fly into the deep gullies to low they can be VERY TURBULANT !
