Grid Ref: NU022150 West Hill Overview:
General Description
A small grass covered hill that forms the middle of a short ridge, in certain wind directions (n.n.west) its possible to fly along to East hill and back.
Access Notes
Take the A697 to Powburn. Immediately north of Hedgley Service Station take the left turn into the Breamish Valley. Go past the caravan site and on to the small hamlet of Branton. Bear right in Branton and after 300 yds continue straight on at the bifurcation in the road (signposted no through road). Continue along the road to the farm, bearing right at the first cottages, across the yard (Please drive slowly) and around the back of a large building. Turn right through a gate and follow the track to the brow of the hill. Park on the flat area next to the track so you can not be seen from both sides of the valley.
Safety
Toplanding - take care because the area is small and it is possible to get blown back in strong winds (spined back ridge 'ROTOR')
If flying back to the cars make sure you have enough height to clear the trees and power lines.
Site conditions can change quite quickly as wind strength increases.
Avoid flying around the corner over the quarry (west side of the ridge) John Wilson, farmer has partridge & pheasant sitting in the woods (Oct-Nov).
Bottom landing in the first field straight out in front (HG) PG's can land near the botton of the hill, if slope landing beware the main face is very steep !
